Next Generation Lane Toll System Project

New Tolling Technology

In 2023, e470.completed a multi‑year project that upgraded tolling technology across all 47 miles of the roadway. The Next Generation Lane Toll System (NGLTS) project began in 2020 with extensive back‑office development and equipment testing, and the first transition went live in summer 2022. From there, the team moved steadily through each plaza and ramp, replacing and improving transponder readers, lane sensors, cameras, and more. Crews kept traffic moving throughout the work, always leaving at least one lane open.

The new system improved tolling and billing accuracy, strengthened reliability, and increased overall efficiency. It also positioned E470 for future interoperability with tolling agencies in other states, paving the way for ExpressToll transponders to be used on toll roads outside Colorado. And because the upgraded system is flexible and modern, it gives E470 room to adapt and bring customers new features as technology evolves.

During the project, E470 also supported the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Colorado Transportation Investment Office (CTIO) as they launched the I‑70 Mountain Express Lanes. The next generation tolling system was installed and integrated there as well. Tolling began on the westbound lanes in early July 2022, covering 12 miles from the Veterans Memorial Tunnel to Empire.
